چکیده

This paper considers a robot in the formof a self-folding sheet that is capable of origami-style autonomous folding. The sheet is composed of triangular tiles, folding actuators and an integrated electronic substrate, and is formed as an n×m box-pleated crease pattern. The design of the sheet is generated by an automated sheet design algorithm. We control the sheet with a programming method including a hardware model and supporting algorithms. In this paper we present the programming method. We describe and analyze the algorithms that generate designs and programs for the sheet. We finally demonstrate and analyze experiments with 4 × 4 and 8 × 8 self-folding sheet devices. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Sequential self-folding of polymer sheets

Shape plays an important role in defining the function of materials, particularly those found in nature. Several strategies exist to program materials to change from one shape to another; however, few can temporally and spatially control the shape. Programming the sequence of shape transformation with temporal control has been driven by the desire to generate complex shapes with high yield and ...

Simple geometric model to describe self-folding of polymer sheets.

Self-folding is the autonomous folding of two-dimensional shapes into three-dimensional forms in response to an external stimulus. This paper focuses on light-induced self-folding of prestrained polymer sheets patterned with black ink. The ink absorbs the light and the resulting heat induces the polymer beneath the ink to relax faster than the rest of the sheet. A simple geometric model capture...

Sequential Folding using Light-activated Polystyrene Sheet

A pre-strained polystyrene (PS) polymer sheet is deformed when it approaches the glass transition state as a result of light absorption. By controlling the light absorption of the polymer sheet, non-contact sequential folding can be accomplished. Line patterns of different transparencies and shapes are used to control the light absorption. The line pattern shape is closely related to the foldin...

Modelling of shape memory polymer sheets that self-fold in response to localized heating.

We report a nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) of the thermo-mechanical shrinking and self-folding behavior of pre-strained polystyrene polymer sheets. Self-folding is useful for actuation, packaging, and remote deployment of flat surfaces that convert to 3D objects in response to a stimulus such as heat. The proposed FEA model accounts for the viscoelastic recovery of pre-strained polysty...

Initiating an antitumor attack.

Designing proteins with cavities In de novo protein design, creating custom-tailored binding sites is a particular challenge because these sites often involve nonideal backbone structures. For example, curved b sheets are a common ligand binding motif. Marcos et al. investigated the principles that drive b-sheet curvature by studying the geometry of b sheets in natural proteins and folding simu...
